The famous distinctive type of Navajo blanket known as the “Chief Blanket”. The Chief Blanket was woven by the Navajos for trade or sale to other Indians throughout their trading area and their popularity had lead to recognition of Navajo weaving. Theses blankets were not worn by Navajo chiefs, but by “Chiefs” of other tribes because they were the only ones who could afford such luxuries. The Navajos have no actual chiefs.
There are three periods of Cheif blankets. The first period of Navajo Chief Blankets featured a simple plain black and white stripe design. It was most known for its red color. The intermediate-period of Chief Blankets features some rectangles, but still retains the basic black and white stripe motif. The later period of Chief Blankets feature four corners and center design as well as the broad stripes.
The woman’s wearing blanket differs from that of the men’s wearing blanket in that it had narrow gray and black stripes instead of the broad black and white stripe motifs. Usually the top, bottom, and center bands were striped with indigo and had rectangles of bayeta in these stripes.
