Like all traders, J.B Moore emphasized quality and good workmanship to make rugs more saleable. Known throughout the then remote Crystal area, J.B Moore began to develop the popular Crystal rug. In 1911, Moore published the first ever Navajo Rug catalog in color to promote weaving to the mail-order buyer. Mr. Moore was able to talk to the Navajo weavers and have them incorporate his design ideas into their weavings.

Early Crystal rugs included borders, crosses, diamonds and a characteristic hook figure somewhat resembling the letter "G". During the Moore-period, many rugs included red as well as natural blacks, white, grays, and browns. Because of the craftsmanship and Moore's influence on design, the early Crystal rugs became a good seller. J.B Moore then left the Navajo reservation and with him the early Crystal rug.

In the 1940's, a new Crystal style began to emerge. Weavers began to use vegetal dye to produce rich tawny colors in the brown-yellow-tan-orange range with a touch of black and subtle green. Sometimes aniline dyes are used in combination with vegetal dyes.

The modern design of Crystal also changed. Today's Crystal is banded-either in straight or wavy lines and has become one of the simpliest of all modern contemporary Navajo rugs compared to the old-style of Moore-period.
