Since the introduction of Germantown yarn by traders, Navajo Germantown Rugs began its inception. Produced in Germantown, Pennsylvania, three and four ply aniline-dyed wool yarn came in a wide variety of bright colors and was brought to the Southwest via Santa Fe Railroad. Though quite costly back then to the average Navajo weaver and not strong enough to be used as a floor rug or warm enough for a blanket, the Germantown rug wasn't produced as much as other rugs. Today Germantown rugs are mainly used as wall hangings and have gained in popularity. They are known for their unusually bright colors and intricate patterns.
