A Ganado Navajo rug always has red background. Another name for Ganado is "Ganado Red," because of the red background. The black, white, and grey designs are based on a central diamond or two. The edges of this central shaped are embellished with geometric flourishes. Stair shaped diamond patterns, crosses, zigzags, and simple geometric shapes decorate the corner spaces outside the central design. A Ganado rug normally has a dark border surrounding the entire rug. Trader John Hubbell first popularized Ganado style rugs, promoting them by catalogue to households in the eastern United States. The Ganado rug was named after the little town of Ganado. Ganado was named after a very influential Navajo leader whom the Spanish called, "Ganado Mucho,' or "Many Cattle."
Because of its wide distribution, many people consider Ganado a classic Navajo rug style.
